Former K‑pop Idol Taeil Sentenced to 3.5 Years in Prison for Sexual Assault in Seoul

Seoul, July 10, 2025 – Moon “Taeil” Tae‑il, a 31‑year‑old former member of NCT, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison by the Seoul Central District Court for the aggravated sexual assault of an intoxicated Chinese tourist.

According to court records, Taeil and accomplices surnamed Lee and Hong met the victim in June last year at a bar in Itaewon. After she became heavily intoxicated, the trio forcibly transported her in a taxi to Lee’s residence in Bangbae‑dong, Seocho‑gu, where the assault occurred.
The court convicted all three under the “special quasi‑rape” statute—applicable when multiple perpetrators sexually assault a victim who is unconscious or unable to resist—and each received a 3.5‑year sentence. They were taken into custody immediately after the July 10 verdict and must complete a 40‑hour sexual‑violence treatment program. Additionally, they are prohibited from working with children or youths for five years.
Prosecutors had sought a seven‑year term, but the court cited the defendants’ first‑time offender status, confession, and settlement with the victim—who has expressed no desire for further punishment—in issuing a reduced sentence.

Judge Lee Hyun‑kyung described the crime as “particularly grave,” noting the victim’s vulnerable position as a foreign tourist in an unfamiliar environment, and acknowledged her suffering.

Taeil, who debuted with NCT in 2016 and was under SM Entertainment until his departure in August 2024, issued a written apology via his legal team during sentencing.
